College of Psychiatry hosts first conference

The recently formed College of Psychiatry of Ireland is to hold its inaugural conference later this month during which the new entity will be officially launched. According to the President of the College Dr Justin Brophy, the Spring Conference will ‘officially launch the College of Psychiatry of Ireland, representing a landmark event in the development of our profession in Ireland’. Due to be held in Carton House, Maynooth, Co Kildare on March 26/27, the programme includes workshops on the treatment of psychosis and ‘getting the measure of psychotic symptoms.’

The new College will also launch a number of position papers for consultation on: mental health services for asylum seekers; homeless mental health services; and general adult psychiatry. Expert speakers will address the meeting including Dr Dermot Walsh, who will speak on ‘Psychiatry and mental health services in an Irish context’.

Prof Kieran Murphy will address the delegates on ‘Challenges facing medical practitioners in the future’ and Dr Anita Ambikapathy will speak about ‘Hopes, fears and resolutions for the future: holding on to what I love about my job’.
