Hackers bid for UK trial fails

Computer hacker Gary McKinnon accused of hacking into American military computers soon after 9/11 has failed in his latest bid to avoid extradition for trial in the US.

Mr McKinnon, 43, claimed he was just searching for evidence of alien spacecraft when he hacked into US miltary computers. Mckinnon of London, suffers from Asperger’s Syndrome, a form of autism, and had been campaigning to be tried in the U.K.

If he is convicted by a US court, he could face up to 70 years in prison.

But Lord Justice Stanley Burnton said that extradition was “a lawful and proportionate response” to his alleged crimes. His supporters claim that he is a victim of the goverments desire to safeguard a ‘special political relationship’ with America.

An appeal to the European Court of Human Rights is being considered by his defence team.
