Expert determines cause of fatal crash

An inquest has heard that three people died in a Co Down road accident after the car they were in suffered a flat tyre. The car was cut in half after it skidded into the other lane and hit an oncoming vehicle. Part of it ended up in a field. Killing driver Mr Newel and passengers John Pirie, 31, Pauline McCaul, 34.

The accident happened on the night of December 17 shortly after midnight on the Killinchy Road. The Mitsubishi Lancer which Mr Newell was driving spun out of control and hit an oncoming BMW before separating into two. Part of the car went through a hedge into a field.

Expert witness Damien Coll stated that a tyre in the Mitsubishi had become totally deflated and others were soft. The senior scientific officer said the rear passenger side tyre of the Mitsubishi was completely deflated before the accident but could not establish how long that had been the case.
