Forensic experts testify in honeymoon murder case
British couple Benjamin Mullany and his wife Catherine were brutally murdered while on honeymoon in Antigua.
The trial against Kaniel Martin and Avie Howell is now in its seventh week, and forensic experts from the Metropolitan Police Service have given evidence.
Anthony Miller, a senior forensic scientist with the Metropolitan Police Service, appeared as an expert witness for the prosecution. Mr Miller a forensic ballistic expert said examinations of bullets and cartridge casings from a murder scene and another scene where Woneta Anderson was killed, led him to conclude they were all fired from one gun. The casings were identified by their make and calibre, Mr Miller explained that the markings on the shell casings recovered from the scene where Benjamin and Catherine Mullany were killed matched. Such markings are created by a firing pin in a weapon and in that case the shape of the marks showed the most likely weapon was a Glock pistol.
A forensic data expert also testified with regard to the content of Benjamin Mullany’s phone. The Nokia 5410 phone, is a key piece of evidence in the trial. Expert Adrian O’Leary, a Higher Technologist, explained how information can be recovered from a mobile device as well as its SIM and memory cards.
Though he had not completed his examination with the prosecution when the trial adjourned, he did reveal details of some of the items found in a folder on the phone including songs which were added on July 28 the day after the newlyweds were shot.
